Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s episode, I speak with Dr. Claudia Perolini about exploring the root causes of emotional eating as well as how to implement coping strategies to manage difficult emotions without feeling the need to turn to food.
I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist and Holistic Wellness Coach that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that share their first hand accounts with their mental health journeys. In this episode, we will hear from Dr Claudia about healing emotional eating habits.
Dr. Claudia Perolini has over a decade of experience in the psychology field helping people manage and navigate their emotions in ways that support their self-esteem and allow them to live more fulfilling lives. Dr. Perolini helps women transcend their emotional eating by supporting them in deepening their insight and expanding their awareness so that they can shift their relationship with food for good.
Emotional eating is a huge struggle for so many women that often leaves them feeling disempowered, ashamed, out of control, and powerless. Because women so often fulfill so many different roles in our society, as caretakers, full time emplooyees outside and inside of the home, women often feel overwhelmed and at times even lonely and thus turn to food. Dr Perolini states that emotional eating is when we eat out of desire to manage or navigate emotions of distress or discomfort rather than in response to our hunger or nutritional needs.
When we turn to food, we are relying on food to help us navigate difficult emotions as a means to get some relief, comfort, or distraction from whatever overwhelming feeling we may be experiencing and there can be negative consequences if we are using food as our main way of coping with our emotions. Not only in terms of health, body image, sense of control, but also overall in our self-esteem.
In this conversation, Dr Perolini explains why we so often turn to food for comfort. She also explains that because food is so easily accessible to us, that it became an easy, go-to way to cope. She also outlines the behaviors and feelings to notice that will help you become aware of your emotional eating patterns and triggers as well as tools you can implement to develop more awareness around your eating habits.
Listen to this conversation and gain more insight and control over your emotional eating patterns.
