110. Helping people recover and heal from addiction

Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s episode, I speak with Adrienne Tichy about substance use and addiction.

I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Adrienne about how she helps people struggling with addiction through her Recovery Residence Community.

Together with her husband Jim, Adrienne has created a recovery residence community for people just out of treatment for addiction. Adrienne and her husband fight for continuity of care after a person leaves treatment.

Adrienne is passionate about dispelling myths about addiction. She explains that addiction does not discriminate. It affects people of all races, religions, and socioeconomic classes. Addiction also does not look like the stereotypes we are taught. Addiction affects our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers…

In this conversation Adrienne educates us on the many reasons for addiction, including traumatic experiences, generational trauma, easy access to substances, social pressure, societal pressure, and the use of substances being so normalized in the media.

Adrienne coins addiction as “accidental addiction” because no one plans to become addicted.

Adrienne strongly believes that recovery is possible. She speaks about the importance of accountability and having a strong support network. She gives many other tips on how someone struggling with addiction can stay sober and recover.

As Adrienne discusses, addiction affects our neighbors, our coworkers, our loved ones… chances are you know someone struggling with addiction right now. Listen to this episode to learn more about addiction as well as resources.
