170. How Creating a Supportive Community and Trying New Things Can Boost Your Mental Health

Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s podcast episode, I speak with Teresa Carnegie about her healing through creating her own community and trying new things.

I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist and Holistic Wellness Coach that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that share their first hand accounts with their mental health journeys. In this episode, we will hear from Teresa about how she healed from a traumatic two years of her life.

Within an 18-month time period, Teresa Carnegie experienced a number of traumas. Her father and childhood friend both died from cancer, she was involved in three car accidents that resulted in mutiple concussions and other injuries, her neuropath passed away, and she left her job of 13 years. She experienced so much trauma in such a short amount of time that she was struggling to cope. She was experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, and became afraid of other people and leaving her home. Because Teresa was struggling so much, her support system began to dwindle. She lost friends and people she thought she could rely on. Soon Teresa found herself isolated with no one to turn to.

Working through the trauma, Teresa realized she needed to create her own support system. This led her to experiementing with all kinds of modalities and connecting with various practitioners. Teresa began working with a number of practitioners, including an emotions based therapist. Learning how to deal with her emotions helped her to heal. Teresa also visited friends that she knew wanted to spend time with her.  Teresa began tapping into her creativity by writing which led her to trying new and exciting things. She loved trying new coffee shops or restaurants. This excitment helped to get her out of the house and gave her inspiration to write about. These connections and new experiences helped to improve her mental health and gave her the motivation and resilience to get better.

Listen to Teresa’s inspiring story of resilience and learn how she was able to take her healing into her own hands.
