62. How Writing Can Help Heal You and The World

Welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s episode, I speak with Johnnie Mazzocco. Johnnie is a published fiction writer, award-winning screenwriter, teacher, managing editor of a magazine, and more! Today, Johnnie and I discuss how writing can positively impact your life.

Johnnie and I discuss how writing can free us to access parts of ourselves that we don’t on a regular basis. She even shares her deeply personal experience of discovering repressed memories through her writing. She explains that when we write about fictional characters, it can give us perspective on our own lives. Writing is a powerful way to tune into yourself and can help you to learn something about yourself.

Creating a regular writing practice can be challenging, especially if you have children. Though writing regularly can be powerful and a goal of yours, it often seems like writing gets put on the backburner when all of life’s responsibilities seem overwhelming. Johnnie gives helpful and practical tips to incorporate writing into your daily life. She also explains that writing can be grounding and it can improve your mental health as well. Johnnie explains that writing lightens the burden of thoughts you may not feel comfortable expressing out loud to others. She goes on to explain that writing is an expression of self-love as well as extremely humbling.

Writing is a vulnerable practice, especially when others read our work or give us feedback or criticisms. Johnnie gives great advice on being vulnerable and how to handle criticism as well as how to continue writing and not let the criticisms stop you from writing.

If you are interested in creating a writing practice whether it’s non-fiction writing, screenwriting, or journaling, then you don’t want to miss this episode. Tune in to learn about the amazing benefits writing can have on your life and the world.
