Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s podcast episode, I speak with Ellen Line about relational and complex trauma.
I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Ellen about how someone can heal from trauma when therapy is out of reach.
Ellen Line, LCSW-C is a healer and creator who helps folks heal from “not-good-enoughness” to transform their relationships with themselves, others, and the collective. She is the founder of ROAR Wellness Co. which is home to her psychotherapy practice and the ROAR Wellness Co.mmunity, an online healing space. Ellen helps people to heal from relational and complex trauma. She states that “Trauma is any experience that we have that overwhelms our brain and our body’s ability to process the experience.” She is helping to redefine trauma. We typically think of trauma as a major event like war, a car crash, or major weather event but Ellen explains that trauma can happen within the interactions we have with other people. She explains what relational trauma is, what complex trauma is, and why some people may develop PTSD while others do not.
When struggling with trauma, you may experience mood swings, not feeling good enough, hypervigilance, irritability, and/or anxiety. Ellen explains that with complex relational trauma you may feel like your feelings are far away, that they are distant, or you may feel numb to your emotions. On the other hand, you may feel like your feelings are huge and overwhelming which may lead to using unhealthy coping skills.
Ellen strongly believes that people are capable of healing from trauma even when therapy is out of reach. She says that therapy and psychiatry do not have a monopoly on healing. She gives many options for people to use in their own healing journey when therapy is out of reach.
If you are someone that has experienced trauma, listen to this podcast episode to learn more about trauma and how to heal from trauma.
