On today’s podcast episode, I interview Filmmaker and Activist, Marin Lepore. Marin was born in China and was adopted by a white, American couple when she was 10 months old. Her three sisters were also adopted from China. Because her dad travels for work, when Marin was 10 years old, they had the opportunity to move to China for six years. Marin’s parents helped her and her sisters stay connected to their Chinese culture. Marin is even fluent in Mandarin! She also tells me about her experience living in China for six years and moving back to the US halfway through High School, with everyone thinking she was a foreign exchange student!
Marin is a filmmaker and the co-founder of Sad Girl Productions. She wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do with her future. She thought she might like to make documentaries. She applied to film school and fell in love with film. Marin realized how important representation is on screen.
Marin realized she was a part of the LGBT community when she was in high school and that’s when she started getting into activism.
We discussed how many gay movies are made through a straight lens. How it’s important for gay movies to be made by the LGBT community. Marin expressed her concerns about how LGBT movies and TV shows that exist are either R-rated, sexual, dramatic, tragic, or for adult audiences. This is why she wanted to make something funny and lighthearted that is accessible to kids and teens. She now has an incredible, well-received Web Series, I Put the Bi in Bitter. It was created by women in the LGBT community.
Marin discusses how she wants to change the toxic culture in the film industry. Her goal is to create diverse, inclusive, female-centric films that highlight women, women of color, and LGBT women on screen and behind the scenes.
