What are the Winter Blues?
“Winter Blues” is a term used to describe the common experience of feeling sad or down during the winter months. These symptoms develop some time in the Fall and can sometimes last into Spring. Though the Winter Blues can last a few months, it is temporary and will go away on it’s own, unlike Depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as Seasonal Depression.
The Winter Blues are not serious, but they are still something that you will want to be aware of and take action on preventing or remedying.

- feeling down
- low energy
- lack of motivation
- changed sleep schedule
- fatigue
- sadness
- tiredness
- restlessness
- cabin fever
- more time in bed
- staying home more often
How to Beat the Winter Blues
If you are struggling with the Winter Blues, don’t fret. The Winter Blues are temporary but there are some things you can do to address these nagging and unpleasant symptoms. The following are things you can try to ease those Winter Blues.
- use light therapy
- get cozy
- embrace the season
- try a winter activity
- spend time with loved ones
- stick to a regular sleep routine
- get physical activity in each day
- eat healthily
- get creative
- add plants to living space

Winter can be a tough time, and it often feels as though it will last forever but remember that this is temporary. Once the winter is over, you’ll be back to your old self. The Winter Blues may not be cured with a simple solution and it may take a little time for you to adjust, but eventually your mood will start to improve.
One of the key things to remember while fighting the Winter Blues is staying aware of your body and moods during this time. It’s important to recognize when you begin to feel down, and address it immediately. Don’t wait for the blues to worsen or become a major problem.
