99. How to prioritize your healing

Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s episode, I speak with Lisa Jo Barr about her healing journey after struggling with her mental health for many years.

I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Lisa Jo about how she began to heal from her trauma and addictions.

Growing up, Lisa Jo had always struggled with her mental health but her family was struggling with their own mental health issues so sadly, she did not receive much support. At the age of 21, Lisa Jo was diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder after having her first psychotic manic episode. She was out of work for 3.5 months due to mental health issues. Ten years later, she was also diagnosed with complex PTSD. She also struggled with multiple addictions.

Lisa Jo sought out treatment and took medication but due to internalizing the stigma surrounding mental illness she felt she was “crazy” and would regularly go off of her medications to prove to herself that she wasn’t “crazy”.

Wanting to live a happier and healthier life, Lisa Jo made her mental health a priority. She worked very hard on her recovery- learning skills to manage her mental health, and experimenting with what worked best for her. She went to therapy and read self-help books, and leaned heavily on her social supports.

Listen to Lisa Jo’s inspiring story of how she went from struggling with her mental health and multiple addictions to living a happy and fulfilled life after working hard on getting her mental health.
