5 Healthy Habits To Start Your Day Off Right

Having a morning routine is an important step for starting your day off on the right foot. Implementing a healthy routine will help you gain control over your time, decrease stress, and improve your mood and mindset for the day.

Start the Night Before

In order to create an effective morning routine, plan the night before: prepare everything you need in the morning so that once you wake up, it’s easy to get everything done in quick succession. And don’t forget to give yourself plenty of time; this isn’t going to be a rushed experience! Take your time in order to cultivate a peaceful and calm morning.

Now let’s dive into some of the best habits to include in your morning routine:

1. Meditate

There are tons of benefits of waking up early and meditating even if it’s just for 5-10 minutes. Meditating reduces stress levels and improves your mood. Some studies even show that mindfulness meditation can strengthen activity in areas of the brain associated with positive emotions.

Meditation, the practice of slowing down and focusing on your thoughts and feelings, can be a great way to nurture your body and mind first thing in the morning. Studies have shown that meditation can improve focus and sleep, reduce stress, relieve anxiety, lower blood pressure, increase happiness levels and more.

There are multiple ways to meditate. For example:

  • Deep breathing
  • Reciting a mantra or prayer
  • Visualizing an image or scene in nature
  • Walking slowly while paying attention to each step

Meditating is a great way to ground yourself and get yourself in a positive and present mindset for the day.

2. Stretch

Stretch or do Yoga.

Stretching has many physical benefits such as improving posture, reducing muscle tension, reducing risk of injury, and improves circulation and blood flow. In addition to the many physical benefits, stretching also positively impacts mental health by increasing serotonin. Stretching is a key component of improving your self-esteem and self-image. Incorporating stretching or yoga into your morning routine can help you wake up and feel good during the day as stretching reduces stress and tension, promotes calm, relaxation, as well as decreases anxiety.

3. Drink Water

Drinking water as soon as you open your eyes is a great way to kickstart the day. Whether you drink at the bedside or in the kitchen, downing a glass of cold water first thing ensures that your body is hydrated and ready for whatever the day throws at it. Many people love to add lemon to their water in the mornings. This simple activity can have far-reaching effects: it helps keep your skin clear, reduces bloating and cravings, regulates blood pressure, aids kidney function, and flushes out toxins.

I always keep a glass of water on my nightstand and recommend you do too!

4. Positive Affirmations

Affirmations make for a great habit to incorporate into your morning routine because they promote positive self-talk which helps to improve self-esteem and self-image. Positive affirmations have many benefits, including helping you to feel confident, motivated, and focused on your goals and wellbeing. They also help you to stay in the present moment.

Your thoughts influence your beliefs about yourself, the world, and those around you. Positive affirmations help you to shift your thoughts to focus on the positive.

Put aside a few minutes in the morning to write down your positive affirmations. You can write these down in a notebook or type them out on your phone—whichever method works best for you! Write a few each morning. Writing multiple affirmations will help you focus on what’s most important to you at that time, while also getting your mind ready for all of the things that are to come throughout your day.

It helps to recite your affirmations out loud while looking at your reflection in a mirror. It may feel silly at first—and it’s okay if it does! But remember: these affirmations are meant for yourself only, so don’t worry about anyone else hearing or reading them.

Take a few deep breaths between each affirmation. Taking deep breaths will help you to relax your mind and body, making it easier to feel more relaxed and present in the moment.

You’ll find that after practicing positive affirmation techniques daily over time, they will have made an impact on how you think about yourself and others around you.

5. Healthy Breakfast

Eating a healthy meal early in the day is a great way to start your day. Eating healthy foods in the morning can help with your digestion, concentration, focus, and give you the energy you need to get through the day. And, while you may not have time to cook every morning, it’s important to understand how you can make healthier choices when it comes to breakfast.

First, plan out your breakfast for the week and include foods that are high in protein and fiber like nuts and eggs, which can help keep you feeling full for longer. Then try some of these tips:

  • don’t go too big—if you’ve got a large appetite, opt for smaller meals throughout the day instead of one big breakfast.
  • get creative with your toast toppings—instead of butter or jam try avocado or tomatoes.
  • make a smoothie and add lots of veggies—you won’t taste them but they’ll give your smoothie an extra dose of nutrients!

I always recommend meal prepping for the week. There are many great healthy breakfast prepping recipes on Pinterest.

I hope these tips help you to build a healthy morning routine that works for you.
