85. Surviving an eating disorder with Suz Carpenter

Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s episode, I speak with Suzanne Carpenter about her battle with an eating disorder.

I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people to improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Suzanne about how she conquered Bulimia.

Since she was a young teenager, Suzanne had a secret that she planned to take to the grave until she was asked a question, ”You say you would die for your kids, but would you change for them?”

Suzanne was struggling with the eating disorder, bulimia and she spent her life trying to hide it. She thought if anyone knew she would be unlovable and lose the relationships in her life. She was also ashamed and afraid that no one would believe her. Suzanne was 6’2 and was desperate to fit in. After being bullied relentlessly, Suzanne thought she would be accepted more if she was smaller. Unable to throw up, she began obsessively abusing laxatives and exercise. Suzanne now realizes that she was using food to numb her pain.

Eating disorders are a disease. They are medically severe and incredibly damaging yet, there is not nearly enough awareness or education as there should be.

Listen to the episode to learn more about Bulimia as well as Suzanne’s powerful and inspiring story of bravery and strength.
