Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s episode, I speak with Erika Wirth about developing an eating disorder.
I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Erika about how growing up in a chaotic household affected her mental health.
Erika grew up in a highly dysfunctional household. Her home was full of tension. There was a constant threat of family breaking up, which felt scary. She explains that she felt very loved by her parents but their toxic relationship poorly affected her mental health.
One of Erika’s coping strategies was to control her food intake and physical exercise which quickly escalated into an eating disorder. Her mother took her to a therapist, a doctor, and a nutritionist. There was a plan put in place to get her well again but they failed to realize that Erika was still living in the same environment that was causing the turmoil which started her disordered eating in the first place.
As an adult, Erika realized that there were things she needed to address that were a bigger factor in her eating disorder. She began to realize that her mental health issues manifested physically.
Listen to this episode to hear Erika’s journey of working on her mental health and getting mentally and physically healthy.
