Welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s episode, I speak with Recovering Perfectionist and Perfectionism Coach, Sarah Herd.
I have a few questions for you.
- Are you a procrastinator when it comes to starting a big project?
- Do you set unrealistic expectations for yourself?
- Are you highly critical of others?
- Do you suffer with low self-esteem and self-worth?
- Are you a “control freak”?
If you responded, “Yes!” to any of these questions then you definitely want to listen to this episode. You may just be suffering from perfectionism.
Sarah explains what exactly perfectionism is and why she believes it’s increased by 33% in the last 30 years! Sarah explains that there are actually three types of perfectionism.
- Self-Oriented
- Socially Prescribed Perfectionists
- Other Oriented
According to Sarah, perfectionists set themselves up for a very high achievement of something. Then they will fail to achieve the task because they’ve set something that’s unattainable. Once they fail at accomplishing their goal, they then beat themselves up. And the cycle repeats.
While perfectionism is not good for your mental health, many perfectionists are actually prideful about their perfectionism. She explains that perfectionists tend to see rest or relaxation as a waste of time because they are not producing during that time.
Due to battling her own perfectionism, Sarah has many tactics and coping skills for overcoming perfectionism that she discusses with me. We talk all about mindset shifts and techniques to handle perfectionism.
If you or someone you love struggles with perfectionism then you don’t want to miss this episode. But,
I have to be honest. I never thought I was someone that struggled with perfectionism but after speaking with Sarah… it gave me a whole new outlook and perspective. I came to the realization that I do suffer from perfectionism and it was quite the shock.
I thought I knew what perfectionism was but turns out, I was way off. I have a feeling you are going to learn a lot from this episode, like I did.
