Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s podcast episode, I speak with Daniel Gospodarek about his determination through his long road to recovery from a near death experience and Traumatic Brain Injury.
I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist and Holistic Wellness Coach that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that share their first hand accounts with their mental health journeys. In this episode, we will hear from Daniel about his road to recovery from a near death experience.
Daniel Gospodarek is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Denver, Colorado. He sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) going into his senior year of high school that nearly took his life. At 17 years old, Daniel was the passenger in a car that rolled 4 times. He woke up days later from a medically induced coma and his entire world had turned upside down. He needed immediate brain surgery and it was uncertain if he would survive. At the stage in life when he was supposed to be working toward his independence and planning college, Daniel was in physical therapy, speech therapy, recreational therapy, and spent his time in the ICU and inpatient rehabilitation. He needed aids and support to function. Daniel was told by his doctors that it was unlikely that he would not graduate from high school that year or attend college on time but Daniel was determined the prove everyone wrong.
With the support of his doctors, loved ones, friends, accommodations from school, and his endless determination, Daniel defied the odds.
Though Daniel’s injuries and TBI still impact him today, he is now in private practice supporting others who have TBI’s. His practice focuses on empowering those who experience these challenges to live the lives they deserve.
In our conversation, Daniel discusses the physical and mental health symptoms from his accident and TBI and the complex feelings he experienced throughout his recovery. He also discusses how this life changing event changed the course of his life and led him to become a therapist.
