Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s podcast episode, I speak with Ann Diment about workplace burnout.
I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist and Holistic Wellness Coach that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that share their first hand accounts with their mental health journeys. In this podcast episode, we will hear from Ann about how a history of trauma contributes to workplace burnout and how to heal.
Ann Diment has spent her adult life recovering from complex trauma after a traumatic childhood. She spent her 20s and 30s rebuilding her life and most of her 40s trying to understand why she kept burning out & how to prevent it from happening again. Ann explains that her traumatic experiences in her early life made her a prime candidate for burnout. Ann explains that she struggled with self criticism, self doubt, and perfectionism, which are all traits that lead people to burnout.
Burnout is a syndrome which results from chronic exposure to chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Ann describes burnout as “complete and utter physical and mental exhaustion.”
Contributing factors to workplace burnout include overworking trauma, lack of boundaries, and moral injury which Ann explains in our conversation. The fear of doing the wrong thing or saying the wrong thing can be draining in the work place.
Ann explains that the symptoms of trauma increase your chances of burnout in the workplace due to different factors such as how you respond to stress, being less likely to form social connections, how you connect with your emotions, as well as physical health issues.
In our conversation, Ann explains the importance of recognizing and balancing your energy gainers and drainers as a way to address and prevent burnout. She also discusses the importance of creativity and why creativity supports wellbeing and prevents burnout.
Burnout is prevalent and it can take a long time to heal from burnout but healing is possible. Listen to my conversation with Ann to learn how you can recognize burnout and heal.
