Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s podcast episode, I speak with Rimi Nygi about how the way you dress can impact your mental health.
I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Rimi Nygi about how after her brother’s death, she discovered that dressing well improved her mental health and lifted her up during her time of grief.
Growing up, Rimi and her brother, Sink would play dress up together. They both shared a passion for fashion and style. These are memories that Rimi holds near and dear to her heart. In 2020, during the pandemic, Rimi’s life was turned upside down when she learned that her brother, Sink had taken his own life.
Rimi explains that the shock and grief were so overwhelming that she couldn’t move, she couldn’t eat or breathe. She couldn’t function. She says that though she didn’t leave her bed, she didn’t sleep well for months.
The only source of comfort and hope she was able to find was in a sweatshirt her brother had given her. Then something her therapist said struck her. Her therapist said “Fake it until you become it.”
Rimi started dressing up each day as a way to cope with her grief. She dragged herself from her bed to go to the bathroom to shower and change. She got out of bed and got dressed up every day, even when she wasn’t in the mood or felt numb. She explains that she didn’t feel the way she wanted to feel but she dressed up every day to cope until she did.
After a while, Rimi began to notice the connection between the way we dress and our mental health. She started to notice that how she felt on the outside was how she began feeling on the inside.
This revelation is how Rimi became passionate about helping people feel better about themselves through fashion. Rimi founded her fashion brand, Sink and Rimi in honor of her brother.
Rimi believes that clothing can change your mindset from within and that the way you dress can change the way you think and feel. That the clothes you wear can help you to feel confident and improve your self-esteem.
In this conversation, Rimi gives tips on how you can dress to improve your mood as well as tips on how fashion can be more accessible to everyone.
