I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Jimmy Clare about his autism.
Jimmy explains that though he was diagnosed with autism in 3rd grade, he didn’t find out he was autistic until 11th grade.
Growing up, Jimmy and his mother were told by school staff and doctors that he had a lot of limitations due to his diagnosis. They were told he wouldn’t be able to read higher than a 2nd grade level and would struggle in many areas of his life.
One of Jimmy’s biggest struggles was school. He explains that he hated school. He was bullied and grew up feeling like an outcast. He felt awkward and would stay alone, avoiding his peers. Jimmy shares what didn’t work for him in school and what the school staff could have done to make his experience better and more manageable for him.
Listen to Jimmy’s story to hear how he was determined to overcome the obstacles in his life and is now thriving in college.
