115. How to Recognize and Remedy Imposter Syndrome

Hello and welcome to my podcast, The Wellness Project with Des. On today’s podcast episode, I speak with Dr. Emee Vida Estacio about imposter syndrome.

I’m Desiree, a Mental Health Therapist that is passionate about helping people improve their mental health and live a healthy and fulfilled life. One way I do this is by interviewing experts in the field of mental health and wellness as well as those that have struggled with their mental health but have gained control over it and now live fulfilling lives. In this episode, we will hear from Dr. Emee about imposter syndrome- the symptoms, how it affects your life, and how to remedy it.

Dr. Emee is a psychologist and has been in academia for over 20 years doing research and teaching psychology. She researches how we are impacted by our feelings of self-doubt, incompetence, and inadequacy. One topic Dr. Emee regularly studies is Imposter syndrome and her own personal experiences with imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome– the persistent feeling of self-doubt despite competence and qualifications.

Imposter syndrome is something so many struggle with especially in this day and age when it’s so easy to compare ourselves with others.

People who struggle with imposter syndrome tend to overwork and stretch themselves too thin to overcompensate for self-doubt. Dr. Emee explains that this often leads to burnout. Burnout can cause physical, mental, and psychological health issues as well as social life issues.

It is common to experience temporary imposter syndrome if you are entering a new space, starting a new job, shifting careers, or being given a new role or unfamiliar responsibilities. But imposter syndrome becomes an issue when it is persistent and unfounded.

Common symptoms of imposter syndrome:

  • Low job satisfaction
  • Low self-esteem
  • Burnout
  • Feeling insecure
  • Overworking
  • Social life suffers
  • Feel like we are not good enough even when we are competent
  • Scared people will find out you’re a fraud
  • Feeling inadequate
  • Feeling incompetent
  • Feeling in over your head

The TLC questioning sequence is one of the ways Dr. Emee helps people to overcome their imposter syndrome. In this sequence, Dr. Emee wants you to ask yourself:

  • Is it true?
  • Is it logical?
  • Is it constructive?
One of the ways to remedy imposter syndrome is to challenge the negative thoughts that come with it.

If you struggle with imposter syndrome then you don’t want to miss this episode full of Dr. Emee’s expertise!
